Lip piercings generally rate as low to moderate on the pain scale. While the lip area is rich in nerve endings and will swell initially, the actual piercing process is very quick, feeling like a sharp pinch followed by a temporary throbbing sensation.

Most lip piercings heal relatively quickly due to the excellent blood supply in the oral area. The inner lining usually heals within 4 to 6 weeks, while the outside tissue can take 2 to 3 months to fully heal. Complex or vertical styles may take slightly longer.
